The University serves undergraduate and graduate students, as well as all learners interested in continuing their personal and professional education. Thus the University aims: to provide both broad intellectual development and career preparation; to develop the ability of students to communicate effectively; to integrate theory and practice; to enhance ethical judgment; to foster moral, spiritual, and social growth, and physical well-being; to promote opportunties to help people directly; to instill a love of lifelong learning and service to others; and, to recognize that higher education is a means by which individuals can improve the condition of the human family.Founded in 1847, Saint Francis University is the oldest Franciscan college in the United States and one of the first Catholic colleges established in this country. Our founders, six Franciscan friars from Ireland, came to Loretto over a century and a half ago to establish a school with the threefold educational purpose of spiritual guidance, formal academic preparation, and community service. The vision and purpose of these friars stood the test of time during the 19th and 20th centuries and will remain the same for the Saint Francis of the 21st century.
